I remember it like it was yesterday, “You will see how hard life gets when you get to University”. The words of my mother as she always taunted me when I complained about school. As always, she was right… Reading full 300 page books for a 3 hour exam, doing 50 hour projects that are worth only 5% of our course grade, attending classes at 8 am in the morning and then leaving to go home at 10 pm. For the first time in my life, I have been on school property from 8 pm until 6 am in the morning studying.
I have successfully completed my first year at University, passing all my courses and doing excellent in my core subjects. Unfortunately, it wasn’t easy, but it was fun. Canada was a whole new experience for me. I am now 20 years old and realize that the world is a lot bigger than just Barbados. I do not regret coming to Canada for school, and given the decision all over again, I am pro-Canada. One year… I would have never seen myself like this. Independent, living on my own, with no rules or guidelines to follow, just myself to answer too. Well, I can pat myself on the back and say well done, you are done year one, three years left to go.
In about 5 hours, I jump on a plane and head back to my beloved island, and I never thought I would say this, but a part of me almost doesn’t want to leave. I have some of the best experiences in my life and have met some of the most awesome people ever. The culture and lifestyle is a lot different and I can say one thing about the people up here, they are not ashamed of who they are and what they do. A job is a job and life will go on… I respect that about Canadians. Another first timer for me was the fact that Canada is multicultural nation, its cool not to be the only arab family (like small Barbados), haha.
Well, Brian LePage just called, he is coming over to check out my new house (1657 Erindale, Oshawa, Ontario, L1G8A4).
